Silenced by Uniformity

Silenced by Uniformity

When one looks at the world and views the beauty of creation, It is a wonder that there’re such diverse groups in creation yet in the midsts of each group the individual is unique. You look at the field and see that grass yet in its similarly as being grass, each leave shouts for attention that you would take time to check deeper and realise that each leave is uniquely lined. Suddenly the beauty that was so clear and flowing is riveting with diversity and deeper meaning. That God would choose to make each bee different - unique that in the midst of the mass of its hive it would not be forgotten or lost. Indeed the uniqueness a stamp, treasured by the creator and every observer who dares to see beyond the obvious.

Yet one must ask is uniformity progress, is peace equal to the demand of silence, indeed is individuality a danger to society. Let it not be so in our eyes that we can only accept others and their difference by denying ourselves. Rather let it be said that I am, I live and I observe, I live and do so in the midst of diversity. I LIVE fully - with others I disagree, but in the end what is important is the musical harmony builds up by the diversity of thought and identity. At first when observing the Zebra the casual tourist only sees, yet in the similarity of the herd, each is unique in its stripe,. The herd that is labelled and defined by abstract means that steals the apparent uniqueness of the individual in the name of peace, solidarity and progress.

I look at a world that seeks to deny the diversity of race or the difference in gender opinion, a world that seeks to rewrite history much like an ostrich hiding its head in the sand. Why would the conversation of race matter, why would differences of thought matter. The beauty of creation is in the appearance of uniformity that accommodates the diversity within-itself. The failure by women to accept that others love to be leaders while others to be housewives who manage the home with great efficiency is an insecurity in diversity, the world becomes a danger to its own beauty. The labelling of those who address race as radicals, arsonist and anarchist ignores the fact that children acknowledge differences with simplicity and the issue of race is not the point of disenfranchisement. It’s only with social development and observation that depending on the personality of the child and their propensity to please and copy or rebel that reposes to race became part of the nurturing process. Thus children may be taught to accept and love or fear and hate.

To take the lessons of culture, family and personal awareness and define these divergent views as minor in the assessment of personal or institutional relations is to be naive. Racism impacts all races, more so when the different communities meet, a defined effort must be done to aid conversation and thus mature interaction. If I learn like the bee to accept my uniqueness as a gift of identity and how to express myself in my colony, social environment I may then be able to leave the colony with sensitivity and self assurance. I will know to flee the aggressive bees by structural means, and fellowship with diverse kindred learners. As an active learner I will seek to hear and understand and not just express my view like a slab of uncooked meat in the dinning table.

Institutional structures must set up the vision that unites people for development, and the acceptance and celebration of diversity that takes into account the despite the fact that One did not participate in the historical abuse of another group. That through socialisation I am part of the beneficiary and victim of potential actions by my group. Yet I walk in the midst of the group as an  individual the gift of uniqueness and the collective awareness.
